Marcie Bianco, a self-proclaimed feminist, recently published an editorial for NBC News titled, “Miley Cyrus’ split with Liam Hemsworth isn’t just celebrity gossip — it’s a blow to the patriarchy.” Throughout the article, Bianco argues that sexuality is not innate and claims that heterosexuality oppresses women.
In the beginning, Bianco condemns men for coercing, harassing, raping, and killing girls and women, even accusing men of going to extreme lengths to avoid taking responsibility for their actions.
“Men continue to coerce, harass, rape and kill girls and women — and go to extreme lengths to avoid responsibility for their actions.”
Marcie continues by claiming that men need heterosexuality to maintain societal dominance over women. Additionally, Bianco states that many women are leaving heterosexuality because they are gradually understanding that heterosexuality is the root of global female oppression.
“Men need heterosexuality to maintain their societal dominance over women. Women, on the other hand, are increasingly realizing not only that they don’t need heterosexuality, but that it also is often the bedrock of their global oppression.”
Bianco goes on to talk about the patriarchy, accusing heterosexual women of not even recognizing their own oppression.
“Patriarchy is at its most potent when oppression doesn’t feel like oppression, or when it is packaged in terms of biology, religion, or basic social needs.”
Later in the article, Bianco suggests that sexual orientation is neither natural nor innate, comparing it to the societal expectation of women having babies.
“Historically, women have been conditioned to believe that heterosexuality is natural or innate, just as they have been conditioned to believe that their main purpose is to make babies — and if they fail to do so, they are condemned as not “real,” or as bad, women.”
Throughout the rest of the article, Bianco praises both Julianne Hough and Miley Cyrus for being open about their sexuality. Bianco even celebrates Cyrus splitting up with her husband, Liam Hemsworth, believing it to be an act of female liberation. Bianco argues that Cyrus’s bisexuality proves that sexuality is neither innate nor natural.
However, it should be noted that current scientific research suggests that sexuality is not a choice.
