The Sun, a British media outlet, recently published an article titled, “Women lose THREE HOURS of sleep every night – and it’s their man’s fault.” According to the article, women lose three hours of sleep every night, totaling over 1000 hours annually. The author of the article, Lizzie Parry, blames men for this inequality. Parry argues that men snoring keeps women awake every night. In addition, Parry claims that period pains and waking up to look after children also cause women to lose sleep.
A survey conducted by Bensons for Beds found that a woman’s lack of sleep is associated with self-esteem issues, with 21% of respondents stating that lack of sleep makes them feel ugly. According to Dr Sarah Jarvis, sleep deprivation can cause poor concentration and irritability. In the long-term, sleep deprivation can lead to type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
The article states that 40% of men over the age of 30 snore. Mike Dilkes, an ear, nose and throat surgeon, claims that it is a condition that can be stopped by doing the following three exercises.
- Throat curls – curl your tongue back towards the roof of your mouth, before bringing it back to touch the back of your top set of teeth
- Say ahhh – open your mouth wide and say “ahhh” for 20 seconds
- Squeal – poke your tongue out as far as it goes before taking a deep breath and making a high-pitched noise like you’re gargling air for 30 seconds
