Kim Iversen, a left-wing YouTuber who I personally enjoy listening to (even though we disagree on many issues), discussed the recent election in Denmark. Social Democrats proved victorious in Denmark by running on a platform of expanding social welfare programs and enhanced border security. This is surprising from an American perspective because most social democrats in the United States support mass migration, both legal and increasingly illegal.
Iversen states that this hybrid platform could help Democrats win more elections in the United States. A 2018 Harvard study found that the majority of Americans support merit-based immigration, ending the diversity lottery, abolishing chain migration, building some form of a physical barrier at the border, and reducing overall numbers of immigration.
She goes on to say that immigration isn’t a left-right issue, it’s just an issue (which I agree with). Additionally, she believes Democrats referring to immigration hawks as “racists” and “bigots” is counterproductive. Interestingly, prior to his 2016 presidential campaign, Bernie Sanders used to support strict immigration policies. In fact, even as recently as 2015, Bernie Sanders referred to open borders as a “Koch brothers” proposal and teamed with Senator Chuck Grassley in 2007 to restrict low-skilled immigration.
I personally agree with Iversen’s analysis. Democrats would be wise to become more moderate on immigration. Border security helped President Trump win the 2016 election. In 1994, running on Proposition 187, which would have prohibited illegal immigrants from using non-emergency public services, helped incumbent Governor Pete Wilson win re-election despite a low approval rating.
