WATCH: MTV Host Explains Why She Believes Political Correctness Expands Free Speech

Franchesca Ramsey, the host of MTV’s YouTube series Decoded, created an episode discussing political correctness and freedom of speech. Ramsey begins by defining political correctness, claiming it is “avoiding words or behaviors that exclude marginalized or insult groups of people who are socially disadvantaged or discriminated against.” According to Ramsey, political correctness is just about “treating people with respect.”

Following, Ramsey cites a poll that suggests 68% of Americans, including 81% of Republicans and 62% of Democrats, believe that political correctness has gone too far. She claims that people who are critical of political correctness are just trying to dismiss conversations about inequality, even accusing most critics of being privileged.

Afterwards, while she endorses the legality of free speech at a governmental level, Franchesca argues against free speech as a principle. For example, she states that it is completely justified for employers to fire workers over offensive social media posts. Ramsey continues by claiming that political correctness expands free speech because it adds more words to the dictionary. For example, the Oxford English Dictionary recently added the following words: microaggressions, mansplaining, cisgender, agender, and genderfluid.

What Ramsey gets wrong is that she thinks critics of political correctness are upset that they cannot say racist or sexist jokes. However, I believe the greater issue is when people, often leftists, get offended by objective facts and statistics. For example, Twitter gave me a 12-hour suspension for factually stating that African-Americans commit approximately half of all homicides in America despite making up 13% of the population, citing the FBI as my source. I mentioned this statistic in reference to why there is greater proactive policing in majority-black neighborhoods. Despite filing for an appeal of this strike several months ago, I have yet to hear back from Twitter.

Another example of political correctness going too far is when feminists negatively react upon hearing that the gender wage gap is mostly due to differences in individual choices (e.g., education, experience, position, total hours worked per week, etc.), not sexism. The same negative reaction also tends to occur when someones states that there are only two genders or says “illegal immigrants” instead of “undocumented immigrants.” In a free society, people should be able to explain their opinion based on facts and statistics without an angry mob of leftists blindly dismissing them as bigoted.
