MTV Host: Primary Elections Are Racist

Franchesca Ramsey, the host of MTV’s YouTube series Decoded, explained why she believes the U.S. presidential primaries are racist. According to Franchesca, 91% of residents in New Hampshire and 87% of residents in Iowa identify as ‘non-Hispanic white.’ However, only 62% of the total U.S. population identifies the same way. Since the racial/ethnic makeup of Iowa and New Hampshire are not representative of the entire United States, Franchesca believes the primaries are racist.

Franchesca continues by explaining how the primary elections in Iowa and New Hampshire greatly influence the primary elections in other states. Since 1980, only Bill Clinton in 1992 won the nomination without winning either Iowa or New Hampshire. According to Franchesca, the first primary election should be in Illinois because the state most closely matches the racial makeup, median age, household income, and religiosity of the entire United States.

Although I agree that Iowa and New Hampshire should not hold their primaries first every election cycle, it is ludicrous to claim that the primaries are racist. Franchesca’s conclusion of the primaries being racist comes from a collectivist perspective. From her point-of-view, different identities have different interests. For example, even though there are not any credible studies to suggest the police are hunting down unarmed black men, Franchesca and other leftists argue that police brutality is an issue that primarily affects the black community. Since Iowa and New Hampshire are primarily white, presidential candidates are less likely to discuss this issue early in the primary.
