MTV Host: There Are Too Many Old, Rich, White Men

Franchesca Ramsey, the host of MTV’s YouTube series Decoded, explained why she believes the top 1% of income earners tend to be old white men. She begins by stating that out of the 540 billionaires in the United States, only three are black, with one being Oprah Winfrey. Ramsey goes on to explain why she believes a racial wealth gap exists in America.

First, she blames the public education system. On average, it is true that white and Asian students attend better public schools. In the United States, which public school a student attends is determined by their zip code. However, many leftists are opposed to school choice, which would allow low-income black and Latino students to attend better public schools. In addition, Ramsey misleads her audience by stating that the federal government provides very little funding to public schools. She fails to mention that education is primarily funded by the states.

Following, Ramsey states that the value of an average white homeowner’s house is greater than that of blacks and Latinos. Additionally, she falsely states that white people are the wealthiest people in the United States. In reality, Asian-Americans have the highest median annual household income.

Although most of her argument is misleading and illogical, Ramsey does have one valid point. African-Americans who are descendants of slaves do not have several generations of passed-down wealth, which puts them at a disadvantage.
