Franchesca Ramsey, the host of MTV’s YouTube series Decoded, explained why she believes wanting mixed babies is racist. It should be noted that Ramsey is in a mixed relationship herself. Ramsey is black, and her husband is white. According to Ramsey, many people comment about how she and her husband will have the “cutest mixed kids.” Similar to almost everything else in the world, Ramsey takes offense to this comment.
Ramsey claims that wanting mixed children or believing that they are cute suggests that being partially white makes a child more attractive and desirable, stating that these comments are “creepy” and “gross.” According to Ramsey, despite not being biracial, she is still “cute as hell.”
To Ramsey’s credit, she admits that most people who make these comments do not have bad intent. However, she argues that intent does not equal impact. Ramsey states that the message of lighter skin being more desirable traces back to slavery, when light-skin slaves received preferential treatment. Following, Ramsey demands that interracial couples understand that their children will face conflicting identities, insisting that they stop focusing on the attractiveness of their physical appearance.
Despite such hysterical claims from Ramsey, Lauren Chen, formerly known as Roaming Millennial, provides a much more positive experience of being biracial. For those of you that do not already know, Lauren is a conservative political commentator for CRTV and is half white and half Chinese. I highly suggest checking out her video of her multiracial experience.
