NowThis, a leftist propaganda media outlet, created a video explaining why they believe U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should be abolished, with Sean McElwee, co-founder of Data for Progress, as the host.
McElwee begins by stating that ICE was created in 2003, arguing that the relatively young age of ICE is a reason to abolish the government agency. However, the age of a government agency or policy is not an argument against it. Prior to ICE, the illegal immigrant population of the United States doubled from 3.5 million in 1990 to 7 million in 2000, according to the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. Since then, the illegal immigrant population has plateaued between 11-12 million.
In 1996, former President Bill Clinton and many Congressional Democrats comprised with Congressional Republicans in passing the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA), which penalized illegal immigrants that have committed a crime. McElwee disavows this bill and misplaces the blame on President Trump for this piece of legislation.
Additionally, McElwee misrepresents a quote made by President Trump of him calling MS-13 ‘animals,’ attempting to portray the president as using such language to demonize all immigrants, both legal and illegal. He also accuses the president and Stephen Miller, Senior Advisor to President Trump, of terrorizing illegal immigrants into self-deporting.
Following, McElwee condemns the president for criticizing Oakland Mayor Libby Shaaf after she warned criminal illegal immigrants of an upcoming ICE raid. He continues by advocating to abolish ICE, claiming that society artificially decides what is criminalized. Apparently, in his fantasy land, the best way to reduce criminals is to decriminalize everything.
Ignorantly, McElwee questions why there is not a militarized force that prosecutes financial crimes, apparently blissfully unaware that committers of financial crimes almost never violently resist arrest. Instead of coming to that conclusion, McElwee just assumes that it is because they are powerful white men.
As a means to use an emotional appeal, McElwee cites an example of an illegal immigrant who was deported back to Mexico and shortly murdered thereafter. Anyone who is remotely intelligent understands that public policy is not based on sob stories, anomalies, or manipulation, but rather, what is the best for the American people.
